The Grind

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” - Arthur Ashe

For the past 11 years I have pretty much managed to make a living and get by in life with a camera in my hands and a creative drive that I’ve had since I was a child. I’ve won awards for my work, sold prints of my photography, screened my films in the theatre and even been nominated for a couple of Emmy Awards by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Over the years, I’ve been involved with all aspects of creating images - be it still images or motion pictures (video) or graphics deigned from a blank slate. Images are my life, my art and my trade.

In my humble opinion, the image is the single most important, sacred thing that exists. Image is everything. You’re like, whoa… Hold up, really? But think about it. What we see - in the image - ignites emotion, elicits action, provides information and perspective, draws out ideas and thoughts…the image moves the world around us.

After much consideration, I have decided to leave my current corporate marketing position to venture further into my world of images. Early next year, I will be launching a creative services company - “The Grind Creative Services” - as an extension of myself and “Jared C. Shumate Photography, etc.” I am incredibly excited and cannot wait to watch it unfold.

There is no greater power than the power of an image, and to be able to wield that power and make a living with it is truly a blessing. I want to share that power with those interested in learning more about it. So, starting in January of 2018, I will begin holding workshops on the following skills required to pursue a career in imagery:

  • Portrait Photography

  • Commercial Photography

  • Photo Retouching / Color Grading

  • Cinematography / Videography

  • Commercial Video Marketing

  • Editing Video / Post-Production

  • Acting for the Camera

  • Filmmaking

  • Branding / Self-Promotion / Networking

I look forward to making some new things and new connections in the days ahead!
Happy Holidays!
